Share Light #23 is a Photo of Owner and His Old Dog in Lake Superior.

John Unger has a 19 year old shepherd mix dog named Schoepp. Unger lives in Wisconsin and is able to ease the pain of the severe arthritis in his elderly dog by taking him for swims in Lake Superior.  Hannah Stonehouse Hudson took a photo of Unger and Schoepp in Lake Superior in 2012 that captured the hearts of millions. After the photo was shared on Facebook it went viral and over 3 million people shared it, making it one of the top social media moments in 2012. Here is the story behind the photo.

The photo has led to John Unger being able to start a foundation. "The Schoepp Legacy Foundation has raised more than $25,000 to help low-income families care for their aging dogs thanks to donations from people as far away as Saudi Arabia and Japan, all inspired by the gorgeous image (Source)."

YouTube Allows Direct Links to Support Causes

Share Light #19 is YouTube Allows Direct Links to Support Causes.

YouTube announced on July 11, 2012 that they are going to permit people who create videos on their site to link directly to some fundraising or petition sites. This has the potential to generate revenue for charities by allowing people an immediate conduit to support causes whose awareness videos have impacted them.

The giving sites for causes that can be linked from a YouTube video include:

Derek Lieu at philanthropy.com talked to a YouTube spokeswoman about this development.
Jessica Mason, a YouTube spokeswoman, said the company decided it was important to give nonprofits and their supporters the opportunity to have more ways to raise money and awareness through videos that are posted on the site. “The idea is to take platforms that are already using the power of crowds and make it easy for any YouTuber to support a project,” Ms. Mason says (Source).

Stranger Helps Mom Discover Baby's Rare Condition

Share Light #18 is Stranger Helps Mom Discover Baby's Rare Condition.

Strangers looking at our Facebook profile photos can stir up privacy concerns, but in this case of Share Light a stranger helped a very sick baby. Charlotte Dent discovered that her son has a rare condition when a stranger saw her profile picture on Facebook, where she is holding her baby George. Here are the facts in the situation as told by Fox News in May, 2012.
Charlotte Dent, 22, from Liverpool, discovered six-month-old George had trigonocephaly -- which without an operation can lead to blindness, severe learning difficulties and even death, the Liverpool Echo reported. Doctors failed to spot the condition, and it was only after a woman whose son also suffers from it saw Dent's profile picture on Facebook that George was diagnosed (Source).
After learning this on Facebook, medical professionals confirmed to Charlotte Dent that her son had trigonocephaly. Trigonocephaly is a condition where the forehead fuses prematurely. The condition requires surgery or it can lead to permanent brain damage to children.

Cancer Patients at Seattle Children's Hospital Create YouTube Video

Share Light #14 is the Cancer Patients at Seattle Children's Hospital Creating YouTube Video.

A YouTube video featuring the hemoncology floor at Seattle Children's Hospital has been very popular.  It would be an understatement to say it went "viral", for in one week's time since it was uploaded on May 6, 2012,  it received over 1.3 million views. The video features the song Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson's single Stronger recently passed the 3 million sales mark (Source).

This video has the ability to encourage children and families struggling with cancer. Here is the video from YouTube that features both the patients and their caregivers.

A user named TheKariJP said in the comment about this video, "I posted this on my face book. For some silly reason I thought I was going thru some "difficult" stuff...What was I thinking? I love this video."

Kelly Clarkson enjoyed the video so much that she sent her own video response to the children that can also be found on YouTube at http://youtu.be/nSFrPHWLKJg. This is a wonderful example of how on YouTube one can not only share an original video but also a response to that video.

Finding Missing Children

Share Light #9 is Finding Missing Children Via Facebook and Twitter.

In January, 2011 the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children began using Facebook pages to help spread the word about Missing Children. According to Social Media Today, "NCMEC partnered with the Justice Department to launch Facebook pages where users can link to local Amber Alerts (Source)." Facebook was also a partner in this project being established (Source).

There is now a Facebook page for all 50 states in the United States and for the locations of the Virgin Islands, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.  The helpful thing about these pages is that instead of a person subscribing to the Amber Alert page for the entire country and receiving many alerts that are not applicable, the social media user can sign up to exclusively receive alerts from their home state or nearby states. To find out more about this program vist the centralized Facebook page explaining this program

For Twitter enthusiasts there is also a Twitter page to announce new alerts @ourmissingkids.  While the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children project is the most visible national effort for the entire United States, there are also many Facebook pages that are set up by loved ones for specific missing persons, as well as other organizations or people who are making their own version of this strategy on social media.

For more information on this strategy led by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to leverage social media to find missing children visit these online articles.
